Today I attended a talk by Prof. Louise Archer at UCL's Institute of Education. During the talk she discussed the current challenges that students face in school, ranging from racial and social discrimination to gendered discrimination and the perceived 'masculinity' of STEM subjects. She discussed how students from underprivileged backgrounds may 'self-segregate' or limit themselves because they are taught to believe that they 'do not belong' in certain institutions or are 'unable' to perform in certain professions.
The talk was highly insightful.
