 THE PUBLIC SCHOOL
 IN HARLEM, NEW YORK

My research will untangle the complex history of school segregation in New York and investigate the factors that led to such divisions. This will not only explore the education system, but also the history of housing, infrastructure, and the city’s urban planning to understand the wider factors that come into play. I will then research and develop the school typology and explore what potential solutions school design can offer to a still divided city. The school will not necessarily solve or pacify racial tensions, but perhaps it can become a safe and resilient space for the youngest citizens of New York City.
