The discussion at A/D/O in Brooklyn today was about internal American borders, specifically about the demarcation of Native American land and their relation to today's nature reserves. Studio Folder presented their research and methodology, showing how maps can change over time and how certain places may be mapped more times than others depending on political events.
It was interesting to see a project that was almost the opposite of mine in terms of mapping. Whereas my maps highlight the explicit political and social effects of the 'colour line' Studio Folder's work, looking at borders from a more geological and neutral perspective are simply seeking ways to represent data. They work from archives, and analyse the different layers that go into cartography before using that information to create a visual output, be it an object, an exhibition or a publication.
